Your Guide to the Bondi to Coogee Walk

There are more coastal walks in Sydney than you could count, and somehow every single one manages to make you stop every five minutes and go "this view is insane".

But one of the most famous - and for very good reason - is the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk.

Yes, it’s all over Instagram.

Yes, there will absolutely be people in matching activewear setting up tripod shots while pretending they’ve just “casually” paused to admire the ocean.

But honestly? The hype exists for a reason.

The views are unreal, the beaches are beautiful, and there’s just something very Sydney about the whole experience. Ocean pools, cliffs, sea spray, iced coffees, people jogging past looking suspiciously energetic…it really does feel like the city at its best.

It’s not the easiest walk in the world, especially on a hot day, but it’s completely worth it.

Bring:

  • water (there are refill stations along the route)

  • sunscreen

  • a hat

  • and ideally that are very comfortable to walk in

The walk itself is around 6km one way and usually takes about 2–3 hours depending on how often you stop.

And you will stop.

A lot.

What You’ll See Along the Way

  • Bondi Beach

  • Tamarama Beach

  • Bronte Beach

  • Waverley Cemetery

  • Clovelly Beach

  • Gordon’s Bay

  • Coogee Beach

The Walk

The walk officially begins at Bondi Icebergs, one of Australia’s most photographed ocean pools.

Even if you’ve seen it online a hundred times already, it’s still impressive in real life. The bright blue pool against the ocean backdrop somehow looks fake even when you’re standing right in front of it.

After starting the walk by heading up the hill just behind the Icebergs building, you'll want to turn around for one of the best views of Bondi Beach.

From there, continue around the headland and follow the coastline south.

This stretch is one of the best parts of the whole walk - huge ocean views, cliffs, waves crashing below, and if you’re visiting between May and November, there’s a decent chance you’ll spot whales offshore too.

The first beach you’ll reach is Tamarama, which is small but really pretty. It’s the sort of beach that makes you briefly consider becoming one of those people who goes for an ocean swim before work every morning.

Next up is Bronte Beach, which is usually a bit more relaxed than Bondi.

There’s a lovely ocean pool here called Bronte Baths, grassy picnic areas, barbecue spots, cafés, and lots of people who somehow look very comfortable after voluntarily running this route.

If you’re feeling like a break at this point, Bronte is a good place to stop for coffee or food before continuing on.

After Bronte, the walk takes you past Waverley Cemetery, which sounds slightly odd in a travel guide, but it’s actually one of the most beautiful spots along the route. The huge old gravestones overlooking the ocean are strangely peaceful and very dramatic in that classic Sydney way.

A little further on, you’ll reach Clovelly Beach.

Clovelly feels completely different to the earlier beaches. Instead of sand stretching out wide, it’s more of a narrow bay with concrete promenades on either side and calm, clear water in the middle.

It’s a really popular swimming spot and a good option if massive waves aren’t your thing.

The Clovelly Hotel nearby also makes a very good excuse for a mid-walk drink or lunch stop if your legs are starting to question your choices.

Next comes Gordon’s Bay, a tiny little cove lined with fishing boats and crystal-clear water.

It’s one of the quieter sections of the walk and feels a bit hidden away compared to Bondi and Coogee.

Then finally, you’ll arrive at Coogee Beach.

And honestly, by this point you’ve earned whatever food or drink you want.

Some solid post-walk options:

  • Coogee Pavilion for food and drinks

  • Coogee Bay Hotel for a pint

  • or takeaway enjoyed from the Rainbow Steps overlooking the ocean

All are equally acceptable choices.

Final Thoughts

The Bondi to Coogee Walk is one of those things that’s popular because it genuinely deserves to be.

Yes, there are crowds. Yes, there are influencers. Yes, there’s a high chance you’ll end up slightly sweaty and questioning why Sydney insists on putting stairs absolutely everywhere.

But the views really are incredible, and there’s something very satisfying about finishing the walk, sitting by the ocean afterwards, and feeling like you’ve properly experienced a little bit of Sydney life.

Just maybe don’t attempt it in jeans or flip flops (thongs if we're being Aussie).
